Haiku to you Thursday: “River”

The river reaches /
back to the moment of its /
beginning: one drop.

The river carries /
forward to the time of its /
enduring: one drop

[Editor’s note: Okay, since there are two haiku here on the same subject, sort of mirror images of each other, maybe I should call this biku or ambi-ku or maybe even dos-ku. Duo-ku?]

Workshop weekend: Haiku: “Smiley faces”

Smiley faces here,
float across my sight. Sincere?
My eyes don’t see clear.

[Editor’s note: a bit of silliness apropos of nothing in particular, other than sometimes I think “emoticons” are overused and somehow this rhyming haiku floated across my mind. Of course, real smiley faces are at times overused as well, creating a sense, at least in my mind, of a bleary reality.]

Freeform Friday: haiku and photo: “Fun with nature”

Trees fall, power fails,
Sirens wail into the night.
Thunder laughs; man sighs.

Fallen tree

Fallen Hackberry tree, over 50 feet tall. Unfortunately, it has probably killed many blueberry bushes lying underneath the branches.

[Editor’s note: over 40,000 or the 100,000 customers served by the Knoxville Utilities Board were, at one time, without power due a powerful line of storms that passed through the area on July 5, 2012. I was without power for nearly four hours and have this downed tree to deal with.]

Haiku to You Thursday: Flicker

Fireflies flicker. /
Evening sun lingers with us. /
Your face holds the light.

Found story and haiku: tough times

We Buy Gold

All that glitters could be in your past.

A shack where she once
sold you your future, she now
buys your gold. Tough times.

[Editor’s note: at the university near where I live, this booth was for several years, a place where you could go to have your fortune told. Now, you go there to sell gold. such is how higher education has changed (pardon the pun). When I went to the same university, I don’t remember seeing as many Volvo, Mercedes Benz, and other high-end cars as I do now. I am sure there were many well-to-do students when I attended, and I’m also sure there are many middle- to lower-middle class students driving less prestigious cars. But as higher education costs continue to rise faster than inflation, maybe this booth is an indication of more than tough times.]

The response

Love is the response /
To the question that is you. /
Forever is my heart.

Clouds arch (amended)

White clouds arch upward,
brushing the lips of heaven.
Pleasantries exchanged.

[Editor’s note. With only a few words to work with, I decided I needed something a little more evocative than “the.” that lead me to try several things, including white. For the moment, I have decided upon white. But maybe you can think of some other work that might work better for you. Maybe, “the” works better for you. That is the beauty of writing: there can be variations.]

Moon dreams

I gaze to the west.
A sign of light not yet done.
The moon dreams of you.

Upon reflection

The sun in your smile
makes a moon of the moments
I think about you.

[Editor’s note: due to the power being out several times for several hours each time in the past couple of days due to power line repair, what I had planned to post is being postponed. Instead, you will be treated to a little more haiku poetry.]
