Monkey down
Some folks went down there to see /
That monkey by the river in Tennessee. /
In this little town called Dayton /
Big Ol’ lawyers are set about debatin’ /
How you and me and Aunt Myrtle got here /
When all of that is rightly clear. /
We didn’t come by way of no monkey. /
All that talk is hooey and junkie. /
We got here by way of the stork, /
Who huffed and puffed and gave a goose snort. /
Dropped us off one by one, /
Except for Aunt Myrtle’s two twin sons. /
Those kids came full COD. /
The postman had a hernia and had to be relieved. /
No, we didn’t come by no monkey shines, /
I’ve had no nip of that moon shine. /
And maybe we can make ourselves a few dimes, /
Selling local junk to those Northern dude kinds. /
To those folks that think us quaint /
‘Cause we’re closer to the soil to feel its taint. /
We got us a fine young man, /
Who may have taught science, to take the stand. /
We’ll raise a ruckus and call attention, /
But we like the guy, so they’ll be no lynchin’. /
Radio from Chicago will be here to broadcast. /
We’ll do what we can to make this theater last. /
So come on down in the hot, July sun. /
Humidity’s here. We’re sure to have some fun.
