Dogs and Cats of Ohio

Dogs and Cats of Ohio

I heard they’re eating pets in Ohio,

Dogs and cats to name a few,

And if they’re not available,

Rabbits, rodents, and rats will do.

I heard the town was Springfield,

Where Bart Simpson is said to live.

Pest control went to his door

And asked, “What the hell gives?”

Bart said he knew nothing of it.

Then he belched and he sighed.

In the back, a bearded Vance

Held up a held up a cat: “Have you tried?”

BK Junior descended to town

With his wild frontier show.

Left a dead bear in the park

So everybody would know.

Then a felon feeling compelling

Tried to put Fear upon the stage.

But being foretold he was too old

Donning a fool’s errand rage.

And the beast it did consume him

In its ever-pitiless way

And once the beast had self eaten.

Not even a cat could find a stray.

Poem and photo – The mayor taped

The mayor taped

I saw the mayor taped to the door. /

His mug was one you couldn’t ignore. /

He promised a meet and greet; /

Then a rasslin’ match to complete. /

I don’t know if I’ll attend. /

Such events do tend to offend. /

While politics can be rough, /

Forearm smashes are beyond enough. /

Seeing bodies thrown around, /

Will make me wonder if Cas Walker’s back above ground. /

Maybe I prefer a bit less sham, /

With politicians to be less ham, /

To save the pork for the table, /

And work for the good of all available.

Relate

Bloviate, expectorate
sniffle, drivel
prevaricate.

Chronic hate, cheat on mate
snivel, quibble,
not so great.

Reprobate, a tyrant’s slate
uncivil, drivel
expropriate.

Disassociate, oh too late
swivel, shrivel
unsubstantiate.

Violate, grope a date
piddle, riddle
desecrate.

Obviate, end of state
cripple middle
subjugate.

The Devil’s Dictionary: “Abscond”

In our continuing quest to revisit a classic, or even a curiosity from the past and see how relevant it is, we continue with The Devil’s Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce. Originally published in newspaper installments from 1881 until 1906. You might be surprised how current many of the entries are.

A young Ambrose Bierce

For example, here is a definition for the words Corporation and Congress. The Old definitions are Bierce’s. The New definition is mine. From time to time, just as it was originally published, we will come back to The Devil’s Dictionary, for a look at it then and how it applies today. Click on Devil’s Dictionary in the tags below to bring up the other entries.

OLD DEFINITION

Abscond, v.i. To “move in a mysterious way,” commonly with the property of another.

Spring beckons! All things to the call respond;
The trees are leaving and cashiers abscond.

–Phela Orm

NEW DEFINITION

Abscond, v.i. To “move in a mysterious way,” commonly with the property of another, usually a lobbyist in order to the bidding of “the people” as conveyed by the lobbyist to the politician. The people in this case being the person, persons, or corporation that hired the lobbyist(s).

Elections beckon! All candidates to the lobbyists respond;
The people are leaving and the politicians abscond.
