Flickering
Next remembers nothing /
Of the world it inherited /
From yesterday’s dreams /
Burning brightly but shortly /
On a stack of birthday cake. /
Take all the kindness /
And burn away the sorrow:
One flame for regret /
One flame for forgetfulness /
Two for forgiveness: one outer/
And one inner /
One flame for the quiet that may never come /
One flame for all left not done. /
And maybe one for love stretched over the decades /
Flickering still on this least of holy nights.
