“Tiger lily”

Tiger lily

No, Mr. Baker,

it is not an

invasion.

It’s a Tiger lily.

The invasion comes

a few days

later

with beer and

outdoor cooking.

That’s when

the aliens

—grill your meat

—light your fireworks

—conflagrate and celebrate

your auto-da-fe future.

“No return”

No return

It feels good, Beth said. /

She snapped off dead lily heads, /

dropped them to the ground. /

This evening, I did the same, /

but she did not return.

“Street seen”

Street seen

I wore shadows.

She wore light.

We met in the street.

The breeze played at painting us together.

The sun declined to stay.

For a moment,

As the light faded,

raindrops dappled, and the breeze whispered,

We were as one.
